An
auger works fine in soft soil;

so fine in compact dry hard-pan
A
garden hose with a nozzle works far better.
Turn
the water pressure up and
Push
the nozzle straight down into the soil.
The hard-pan will dissolve
And
loosen the rocks
Which
can easily be removed by hand.
Faster, easier, and without the noise.
